ISKO - International Society for Knowledge Organization

 

Founded in 1989, ISKO is the leading international society for organization of knowledge. ISKO has a broad and interdisciplinary scope. ISKO’s mission is to advance conceptual work in knowledge organization in all kinds of forms, and for all kinds of purposes, such as databases, libraries, dictionaries and the Internet.

 

As an interdisciplinary society, ISKO brings together professionals from many different fields. ISKO counts more than 500 members all over the world, from fields such as information science, philosophy, linguistics, computer science, as well as special domains such as medical informatics.

 

In order to achieve its mission and goals, ISKO works with

 

ISKO is organized in an Executive Board with 7 members, a Scientific Advisory Council with 22 members. Membership meetings are arranged every two years. ISKO has 17 national chapters.

 

Among ISKO’s most important activities are

 

ISKO cooperates with international and national organizations such as UNESCO, the CEC and ISO. In addition, links are established to FID, in particular FID/CR, and IFLA, in particular the section on Classification and Indexing, ASIS SIG/CR (Special interest group on classification research), and Infoterm.

 

ISKO offers both individual and institutional memberships. Individual memberships are open to all that are interested and cost DM 80, USD 50, or DKK 300 per year. Institutions and companies can become institional members for DM 160, USD 100, or DKK 600 per year. Benefits for both memberships include i.a. the journal KO and discounts on conference participation and publications. ISKO’s Web site, to be launched in August 1997, will provide further services, with options for networking and current awareness of topics, people and places within the scope of ISKO.
